The Grand Valley State track and field team concluded the first day of competition at two outdoor meets, the USF Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Florida, and the 49ers Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, on March 15.

In Tampa, five Lakers set personal-best times in their events. In the men's 400m hurdles, Steven Harris led his team by securing fourth place with a time of 52.50 seconds. He was followed by Fallou Gaye in sixth place with a time of 52.68 seconds and Joshua Hurt in thirteenth place at 58.7 seconds. On the women's side, Ashtyn Gluck achieved a personal best with her fourteenth-place finish time of 1:04.66.

In the women's 200m race, three out of four athletes recorded new personal-best times: Kate Zang (24.42 seconds), Catherine Guckenberger (24.50 seconds), and Isabel Abdouch (24.72 seconds).

At the 49ers Classic in Charlotte, Shelby Ulven claimed her first victory of the season with a personal-best throw of 57.86 meters in the women's hammer throw event. Bobby Maxwell started his outdoor season strong by placing third in javelin with a distance of 60.28 meters.

The men's hammer throw was postponed to Saturday morning due to insufficient daylight; Shane Byrne currently leads for Grand Valley State.

Saturday's events will include further competitions at both venues starting from early morning hours through afternoon sessions featuring shot put and discus events among others.
