Grand Valley State begins West Coast trip strong at Cal State L.A. Twilight Open

Los Angeles, CA – The Grand Valley State throws team began their weekend in California at the Cal State L.A. Twilight Open on Wednesday, April 10th.

Bobby Maxwell secured first place in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 63.95 meters.

In the women's hammer throw, Shelby Ulven led the Lakers by finishing third with a distance of 56.23 meters, followed by Alaina Omondoe in fifth place with a throw of 55.03 meters.

On the men's side, Shane Byrne achieved a personal best in the hammer throw, earning fourth place with a distance of 62.08 meters. Matt Thomas finished in eleventh place with a throw of 53.19 meters.

The Lakers will continue their west coast trip on Thursday, April 11th as they participate in day two of the Cal State L.A. Twilight Open and begin competing at both the Pacific Coast Invitational and Bryan Clay Invite.

The Pacific Coast Invitational will feature eight field events for the Lakers, including hammer, discus, shot put and pole vault for both men and women.

Shane Byrne will represent Grand Valley State men in the men's hammer throw starting at 11:00 a.m., while Shelby Ulven and Alaina Omonode compete on the women's side at 2:00 p.m.

Nine athletes from Grand Valley's pole vault crew will compete throughout the day starting at 11:00 a.m., continuing until late evening.

The women's shot put event will have five Lakers participating beginning at 5:15 p.m., led by Erika Beistle along with Mackenzie Bohrer, Reette Thorns, Paige Westra and Margaret Stevenson.

Myles Kerner and Matt Thomas are set to compete in men's shot put for Grand Valley at 7:00 p.m.

Day two of the Cal State L.A. Twilight Open includes competitions for long jumpers Luke Jelderks and Caleb Taylor on the men's side while Alaina Diaz represents on the women's side; Sydney Cangilla and Joslyn Bentz take part in women's high jump later that night.

At Bryan Clay Invite starting from early evening hours (7:45 p.m.), Landyn Howell along Maria Mitchell plus Kayce Rypma engage themselves into steeplechase races; Caleb Futter rounds off proceedings during men’s equivalent contest ending around quarter-to-ten time frame (9:45 p.m.).
