The Grand Valley State softball team, ranked No. 14, played a doubleheader against Ferris State on Sunday in Allendale. The Lakers managed to secure a win in the first game with a score of 2-1 but fell short in the second game, losing 1-0. This brings their season record to 23-12 and an even 6-6 in GLIAC play.
In the opening game, Ferris State took the lead in the fifth inning with a triple followed by a single. However, Grand Valley State responded promptly when Morgan Spicer hit a two-run single after the bases were loaded due to an error by Ferris State. Ashley Platek was instrumental for the Lakers as she pitched all seven innings, allowing only one run from five hits and striking out two players.
Game two saw no scores until Ferris State managed an RBI single in the sixth inning. Despite outhitting their opponents 7-5, Grand Valley State could not level the score. Morgan Spicer again led offensively with two hits from three at-bats and drew a walk. Genesis Eggart pitched throughout this game as well, conceding one run from five hits while striking out four.
Looking ahead, Grand Valley State will travel for another GLIAC doubleheader against Parkside next Tuesday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The games will be available for streaming on FloSports with additional coverage through live stats and video links on gvsulakers.com.
