Grand Valley State University's track and field teams completed the first day of the 2025 GLIAC Championships on Saturday evening in University Center, Michigan. The Lakers dominated several events, including sweeping podium finishes in some categories and securing first place in both men's and women's distance medley relay (DMR) races. The team concluded the day with a total of 151 points, leading all schools.
Mason Floria participated in the men's heptathlon, starting with a second-place finish in the 60m dash with a time of 7.23 seconds, earning him 802 points. He also competed in long jump, shot put, and high jump; however, results for these events are yet to be posted.
Field events commenced at 3 p.m., featuring competitions such as women's weight throw, women's long jump, men's pole vault, and men's long jump. Men's weight throw concluded the day's field events.
In the pole vault event, Camryn Battjes, Colton Emeott, and Wyatt Alwine cleared marks of 5.08 meters to secure first through third places respectively. This height marked personal bests for Battjes and Emeott and ranks as the seventh-best mark in GVSU history.
The women's weight throw saw Shelby Ulven taking first place with a personal-best throw of 19.41 meters. Alaina Omonode came second with a mark of 17.90 meters while Kennedy Jackson took third with her personal-best throw of 16.72 meters.
The men also achieved a podium sweep in weight throw: James MacKey Jr.'s throw of 20.37 meters won him the title at this year's championships; Michael Griffey followed with a second-place toss measuring 19.46 meters; Myles Kerner rounded out third place at 19.19 meters.
GVSU's long jumpers also performed well; Luke Jelderks earned gold for his mark measuring seven-point-zero-one-meter jumps among male participants whereas Nyla Reed secured third place among female competitors by achieving five-point-five-nine-meter distances during competition.
Brooke Barkocy along with Destini Dorkins advanced into tomorrow’s finals after qualifying heats held earlier today within sixty-meter hurdle preliminaries - both ranked highly finishing positions three & five respectively within standings orderings! Similarly positioned Josh Hurt emerged victoriously clinching top spot times eight-tenth-second duration registering impressive achievements overall progression phases scheduled later date same context continuing theme advancement progressions ahead towards future prospects therein aligning aspirations goals beyond present moment focus now!
