Grand Valley State University's baseball team achieved a four-game sweep against the University of Indianapolis with two victories on Sunday. The Lakers won the first game 13-6 and followed up with a 6-2 win in the second game. This performance improved GVSU's record to 8-2, while Indianapolis fell to 5-6.
The Lakers will now travel to Florida for a six-game series starting Wednesday. They will face Ashland at noon, followed by Shorter at 3:30 p.m., with all games taking place at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida.
In the first game, shortstop Evan Morrison walked and left fielder Ryan Dykstra doubled him to third base. Jovan Gill then scored Morrison with a ground out, and Jonas Gulbrandsen drove in Dykstra. Winning pitcher Collin Bradley managed to navigate through a challenging situation after Indianapolis scored one run in the bottom of the first inning. GVSU added four runs in the third inning, with Dykstra driving in Zach Warren and Gill hitting a three-run home run.
The team continued their momentum by scoring three more runs in the fourth inning on four hits. Morrison singled to bring in one run, Dykstra recorded an RBI double, and Gill grounded out to score Morrison again. Ayden VanEnkevort doubled home Brendan Guciardo, who had started the fifth inning with a single. In the seventh inning, Dykstra hit his third double of the game to drive in two more runs before Morrison scored on a wild pitch.
Bradley finished with two runs allowed on five hits over seven innings, improving his season record to 2-0. Key performances included Morrison going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and three walks, Dykstra going 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs, and Gill contributing four RBIs along with a home run.
In the second game, GVSU opened strong by scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning. Jonas Gulbrandsen homered after Jovan Gill's single to give them an early lead. Despite Indianapolis scoring once in response during the second inning, Gill extended GVSU's lead by homering again in the fifth inning.
Gulbrandsen added another RBI by bringing home Dykstra for a 4-2 lead later that inning. The Lakers secured their victory by adding two insurance runs in the ninth inning as Warren reached base on a fielder's choice before being driven home by Dykstra's single.
Freshman Sebastian Talaga earned his second win of the season after allowing one run on two hits over six innings while striking out three batters. Freshman Ty Randall recorded his first career save after pitching two innings without conceding any further scores.
Gulbrandsen contributed significantly throughout both games by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs including one home run during Game Two alone; meanwhile both Estrada & Gill made notable contributions too – particularly noteworthy being how both players each collected pairs within respective encounters!
