Grand Valley State University's baseball team experienced a mixed day at the RussMatt Collegiate Baseball Invitational in Davenport, Florida. The Lakers won against Ashland University with a 5-2 score but fell to Shorter University in a narrow 1-0 defeat.
The victory over Ashland was significant for Grand Valley State, now holding a 9-3 record. "Thunderstorms that went through central Florida and pushed the start time back versus Ashland did not slow down the GVSU offense," stated the press release. In this game, sophomore Ryan Stimac's performance stood out as he contributed significantly with both his bat and defense. Stimac singled, stole second base, and scored on an Evan Morrison double in the third inning. Later, he also threw out an Ashland runner attempting to stretch a single into a double.
Grand Valley State extended their lead with contributions from players like Jonas Gulbrandsen, Brendan Guciardo, Ayden VanEnkevort, Caleb Estrada, and Zach Warren. Senior pitcher Allan Thorington was credited with the win after allowing two runs on six hits over 7.2 innings while striking out three batters.
Despite efforts in the second game of the day against Shorter University, Grand Valley State struggled offensively and managed only four hits and two walks. Shorter's single run in the sixth inning was enough to secure their victory. Colby Phipps delivered an impressive performance for Grand Valley State by giving up just one run on three hits and recording nine strikeouts.
The Lakers' schedule has been adjusted due to weather conditions affecting travel plans for Minnesota State. Instead of facing them, Grand Valley State will play against Northwood at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
