Grand Valley State University (GVSU) achieved a doubleheader sweep against Gannon University in non-conference baseball action on Friday. The games took place at the GVSU Baseball Field, with the Lakers securing an 8-2 victory in the first game and a 5-4 win in the second, which concluded with a walk-off.
In the opening game, GVSU quickly established a lead with two runs in the first inning. Shortstop Evan Morrison and left fielder Ryan Dykstra initiated the scoring sequence with singles, followed by Jovan Gill's sacrifice fly and Jonas Gulbrandsen's RBI single. Morrison later doubled to drive in two more runs, while Caleb Estrada added another run with a single.
Gannon managed to score twice in the fifth inning. However, GVSU responded with three additional runs in the sixth inning through hits from Dykstra, Gill, Gulbrandsen, and Brendan Guciardo. Senior right-handed pitcher Jayden Dentler earned his fourth win of the season by allowing two runs on six hits over several innings.
In game two, GVSU maintained their lead until a late-game home run by Gannon tied it at 4-4. The Lakers regained control when catcher Nick Krstich hit a decisive single that scored Ryan Stimac for a walk-off win. Earlier contributions included Dykstra's solo home run and key hits from Krstich and Morrison.
Collin Bradley started on the mound for GVSU, allowing two unearned runs across six innings. Ayden VanEnkevort secured the win after pitching 1.2 innings with four strikeouts.
The teams will meet again on Saturday to conclude their four-game series.
