Grand Valley State University secured a 19-13 victory over Gannon in a high-scoring baseball game at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers, now holding a 16-4 record for the season, are set to begin their GLIAC schedule with a four-game series against Parkside starting next Friday.
The final game of the series against Gannon was notable for its unpredictable nature, influenced by strong winds reaching up to 50 mph. The Lakers capitalized on these conditions, accumulating 22 hits including six doubles, five home runs, and one triple. They managed to score multiple runs in each inning except the seventh.
Designated hitter Jovan Gill initiated the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Ryan Dykstra contributed with a two-RBI single in the third inning. Despite nine walks that allowed Gannon to stay competitive during the middle innings, they briefly took an 8-7 lead in the fourth before Grand Valley State regained control with three runs.
Gill's performance was instrumental; he walked and scored on Jonas Gulbrandsen's triple, followed by Brendan Guciardo singling home Gulbrandsen and Caleb Estrada scoring on an error.
The Lakers extended their lead with four additional runs in the eighth inning through three home runs from Evan Morrison, Dykstra, and Gill again. Jonas Gulbrandsen concluded their scoring efforts with another solo home run.
Gill ended his day going 4-for-5 with six RBIs and two homers. Morrison recorded four hits as well as two RBIs and one homerun. Other notable performances included VanEnkevort's three RBIs from his two hits including one homerun; Gulbrandsen had three hits contributing to two RBIs alongside his own homerun; while both Guciardo and Estrada also played key roles.
Pitcher Edward Konow earned credit for this win after allowing only two runs across his pitching stint spanning over two innings whereas Colby Phipps restricted opponents' advances further down by conceding just one more point amid striking out four batters within another pair of innings.
