Grand Valley State men's tennis edges Purdue Northwest in GLIAC opener

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team concluded their opening weekend of GLIAC play with a narrow 4-3 victory over Purdue Northwest on Saturday evening. This win improves the Lakers' record to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Purdue Northwest secured the doubles point after winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov achieved a victory with a score of 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Victor Lopes and Lucas Gonzalez narrowly lost with a score of 5-7 at the top doubles position. Denys Zamaraiev and Chimo Minguez also faced a close defeat with a score of 6-7 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles matches, Lucas Gonzalez earned a straight-set victory with scores of 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Jorge Ruiz came back from behind to secure a three-set win with scores of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Patricio Sepulveda dominated his match with scores of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, while Lawrence Ivanov won convincingly with scores of 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Looking ahead, the Lakers will continue their GLIAC play on the road next weekend against Ferris State on Friday, March 28th at 2:00 PM and Wayne State on Saturday, March 29th at 10:00 AM.
