GVSU softball hosts Purdue Northwest for season home opener

The Grand Valley State softball team is set to host Purdue Northwest in their first home game of the season. The doubleheader, part of the GLIAC conference, will take place on Wednesday, March 26, with the first game starting at 3:00 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.

The Lakers have recently concluded their opening weekend of GLIAC play. They achieved a doubleheader sweep against Roosevelt but lost both games in another doubleheader against Parkside. Currently, GVSU holds an overall record of 11-15 and a conference record of 2-2.

The team's batting performance shows a .279 average with 38 doubles and 13 triples. Freshman Madelynn Pope leads with a .379 batting average, having accumulated 26 hits and six triples. Pope was particularly successful in the games against Roosevelt, securing six hits and four runs. Freshman Grace Usher has also contributed significantly with a .328 batting average and her first collegiate home run last weekend. Junior Elizabeth Wesoloski boasts a .318 batting average with the most hits on the team.

On the pitching side, GVSU's staff maintains a team ERA of 3.29, placing them fourth in the GLIAC rankings. Freshman Karli Dorr is notable for her seventh-place ranking in ERA within the conference and leading strikeouts for GVSU. Junior Nevaeh Ingram follows closely with her own impressive statistics in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Purdue Northwest enters this matchup with a season record of 6-17-1 and a conference record of 1-3. Their recent games included splitting matches against Parkside before losing two to Roosevelt. The Pride's batting average stands at .285 as they prepare for this contest.

Leading Purdue Northwest's offense is Amanda DeBoer with a .406 batting average, followed by Olivia Hernandez who leads in runs batted in for the team. On the mound, Rylan Gick stands out among Purdue Northwest pitchers.
