The GVSU women's lacrosse team will begin their GLIAC play on the road this weekend, facing Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and Northern Michigan on Sunday. The Lakers recently completed their first homestand of the season, facing two top-10 opponents. They were defeated by Maryville with a score of 10-5 and UIndy 11-8. Despite these losses, the Lakers hold a 5-3 record and are ranked 17th in the latest IWLCA poll.
In recent accolades, Kendra Swope and Sarah Krause were named GLIAC Players of the Week. Swope contributed four goals, six groundballs, and three caused turnovers in the last two games, while Krause made 13 saves in a single 60-minute game, achieving over 100 career saves.
Previously, the Lakers have demonstrated dominance in the GLIAC, securing four consecutive regular season and tournament titles and holding a 35-game undefeated streak in conference play. The team was also favored to win first place in the league's preseason poll.
GVSU's upcoming game against Concordia-St. Paul marks the start of their GLIAC season, while it will be the third league game for the Golden Bears. Concordia-St. Paul's current record is 5-4 overall, 1-0 in the conference, and their leading scorer, Susie Monson, has accumulated 31 points including a GLIAC-high 15 assists. The teams have met 12 times previously, with GVSU winning all encounters.
Following that, GVSU will meet Northern Michigan, who enters the weekend with a 6-3 record and the league's leading goal-scorer, Josie Lakosky. Lakosky has amassed 32 goals and 15 assists. Northern Michigan's previous encounters with the Lakers have resulted in a winless record of 0-16.
