Grand Valley State University wrapped up their outdoor home opener today in Allendale, Michigan, with notable performances in discus, javelin, and pole vault. Despite a small number of competitors, the event yielded several personal and season-best records, including a groundbreaking performance by Erika Beistle.
In the women's discus event, Erika Beistle achieved a lifetime best with her third throw, reaching 66.63 meters (218-7). This throw not only set a new NCAA Division II record but is also the second-best in the world currently, the fourth-best in women's collegiate history, and the best mark at Grand Valley State. Maggie Stevenson and Sophia Snellenberger also participated, throwing for season-best and personal-best marks, respectively.
In the men's discus invitational, James MacKey Jr. led with a personal-best throw of 56.05 meters (183-10), placing him third in Grand Valley State history. Nathan Spitzley followed with a season-best throw, ranking third overall in the event.
Grand Valley's sole javelin competitor, Will Gaston, recorded a season-best throw of 54.20 meters (177-10), securing the top position in the event.
The women's pole vault saw participation from five athletes, with Brooke Bowers leading at 4.08 meters (13-4.5). The men had seven competitors in pole vault, with Dolan Gonzales achieving a season-best at 5.11 meters (16-9.25).
Looking ahead, Grand Valley State's track and field teams will continue their season on the road for the South Florida Invitational in Tampa, Florida, and the Ball State Invite in Muncie, Indiana. Details on these upcoming meets will be available on the university's athletics website.
