Grand Valley State athletes earn GLIAC Commissioner's Award for winter sports success

Five student-athletes from Grand Valley State University have been honored with the prestigious GLIAC Commissioner's Award for their achievements in winter sports. The announcement was made by the league office, highlighting the contributions of Rylie Bisballe, Nicole Kamin, Alaina Omonode, Myles Kerner, and Scott Spaanstra.

Rylie Bisballe, for the second consecutive season, received the GLIAC Commissioner's Award. She has played a crucial role in leading GVSU to a National Championship and a 38-2 record in women's basketball. Bisballe led her team with 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, along with recording 67 steals and 31 blocks. Her academic achievement includes a 3.71 GPA in accounting and recognition as a two-time WBCA and D2CCA All-American.

Nicole Kamin, a first-time recipient of the award, is a key player in the women's basketball team. Kamin scored 9.2 points per game and was recognized for her defensive skills with 101 steals, ranking her first in the conference. Her academic pursuits include a 3.69 GPA in elementary education.

Alaina Omonode, a first-time honoree, made a mark in indoor track and field by consistently placing in the top five at events throughout the season, earning All-America honors for her performance. Omonode maintains a GPA of 3.729 while pursuing a degree in exercise science.

Myles Kerner received the award for the fourth time in his career, excelling in shot put and weight throw during the season. His achievements include setting a new record at the Kelly Family Sports Center and earning a 4.000 GPA for the 2024 fall semester while pursuing a master's degree in communications.

Scott Spaanstra, an honoree for the 2024-25 winter season, had a standout indoor track season, being named the 2025 GLIAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. He achieved a personal best in the 800m and helped his team to success in the distance medley relay. Spaanstra maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.733 while working toward a master's degree in higher education.

The recognition celebrates both their athletic and academic accomplishments, reflecting the dedication of Grand Valley State's student-athletes.
