GVSU lacrosse team clinches 12th GLIAC regular season title

Despite a lightning delay, the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's lacrosse team secured a victory over Davenport with a score of 17-6. This win awarded the Lakers their 12th GLIAC regular season title in the program's history.

Ashleigh Rothe opened the scoring for GVSU, assisted by Gracie Bancroft. Following a goal by Davenport, GVSU regained the lead with a goal from Ella Boose. The Panthers ended the first period with a 3-2 lead after two goals.

The second quarter saw a decisive 4-0 run from the Lakers, with goals from Zoe Ziegler, Rothe, Bancroft, and Ainsley Shilling, resulting in a 6-3 lead. After another goal by Davenport, GVSU added four more goals, including two from Jillian Bingman and one each from Shilling and Rothe, leading 10-4 at halftime.

GVSU extended their dominance into the third quarter with a 5-0 run. Ziegler and Grace Maddox each scored twice, and Rothe added one more goal.

In the final quarter, both teams scored twice. Bancroft and Mara Misiurewicz were the scorers for GVSU.

Rothe led the team's offense, contributing four goals and two assists in her record-setting 76th appearance. Ziegler also made a significant impact with three goals and three assists, surpassing 100 career points. Meanwhile, Bingman, Bancroft, Maddox, and Shilling each added two goals. Additional contributions came from Boose and Misiurewicz with one goal each. Assists were credited to Kendra Swope, Bingman, Bancroft, Boose, and Ella Manfred.

In goal, Kaylyn Cater secured the win, while Sarah Krause made four saves. Defensively, Elora Ferrie and Rothe each forced two turnovers. Ferrie, Rothe, Bingman, and Bancroft secured two ground balls each. GVSU dominated the draw controls 18-8, with Boose achieving seven wins, and Rothe and Kylie Waeghe each contributing three.

The Lakers will conclude their regular season on April 27th with a game against Saginaw's Cardinals.
