Grand Valley State University's track and field teams concluded a successful four-day stint, splitting their participation between two locations—the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California, and the Al Owens Classic held on home turf in Allendale, Michigan. Collectively, the Lakers accomplished 49 personal bests and updated 22 records in the university's all-time top 10 standing.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, notable performances included Maggie O'Malley, Annika Sandman, and Maria Widmann in the women's 10000m, each achieving personal bests. In the 3000m steeplechase, Owen Westerkamp and Maria Mitchell delivered record-setting performances. Westerkamp's time of 8:49.42 ranked as the second-fastest in school history, while Mitchell clocked in at 10:12.92, matching the second-place distinction in the women’s category.
Ana Tucker, Koby Fraaza, and others advanced their standings in the university's record book during the 10000m and several personal records were set in the subsequent 800m and 5000m events. The following day, Sam Allen and Scott Spaanstra excelled in the men's 800m, both recording personal bests.
At the Al Owens Classic, a range of field events took place including hammer throw, shot put, triple jump, and pole vault. Grand Valley's participation in the men's pole vault led to several personal and season-best clearances. In women's events, competitors registered personal bests across various disciplines, notably in pole vault and hammer throw.
Relays, sprints, hurdles, and field events defined the final day of competition. Highlights included personal-best performances in the 100m and 200m dashes and triumphant efforts in the long jump, where personal records were achieved in both men's and women's categories.
Grand Valley State's teams now look forward to the upcoming weekend, with events scheduled at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, the Clark Wood Invite in Louisville, and the GVSU Extra Weekend Meet back home. Further details will be available on their official website.
