The GVSU women's lacrosse team captured the GLIAC Championship title with a decisive 15-9 victory over Northern Michigan today, concluding their season with a 15-3 record. They now await the announcement of their position in the NCAA Tournament Selection Show scheduled for tonight.
Northern Michigan initially took the lead, but Ella Boose quickly leveled the score for the Lakers. Zoe Ziegler added a goal shortly after, granting GVSU the lead. Despite NMU's efforts to tie the game, GVSU responded with goals from Boose and Jillian Bingman. The first quarter ended in a 4-4 tie.
In the second quarter, Ashleigh Rothe scored twice, giving GVSU a 6-4 lead, though Northern Michigan managed to keep it close with a late goal, leaving the score at 6-5 at halftime.
Kendra Swope extended the Lakers' lead in the third quarter, followed by further goals from Bingman and Boose, making it 9-6. Despite NMU closing the gap to 9-7 before the final quarter, GVSU maintained control in the fourth quarter. Rothe scored twice more, interspersed with a goal from Leah Leonard, pushing their dominance to 12-7. GVSU sealed the game with additional goals from Boose and Grace Maddox, complemented by two crucial saves from Sarah Krause.
Ella Boose excelled, notching five goals and five draw controls, while Ashleigh Rothe contributed four goals, two assists, and seven draw controls. Jillian Bingman scored twice. Kendra Swope, Leah Leonard, Zoe Ziegler, and Grace Maddox each added a goal. Additional contributions came from Ziegler, Bingman, and Maddox with assists, and Isabella De La Cerda with four draw controls.
In goal, Sarah Krause finalized five saves in the latter half, and Kaylyn Cater secured the victory with two saves. Defensive efforts included two turnovers caused by Quinn McElroy, who also collected two groundballs. Gracie Bancroft finished with three groundballs, and Karleigh Rothe added two.
