State Representative Nancy DeBoer, a Republican from Holland, has moved forward with a legislative proposal intended to minimize classroom distractions by limiting cell phone use in Michigan's public schools. As chair of the House Education Committee, DeBoer advanced House Bill 4141, which mandates school districts to create policies restricting wireless device usage during class times.
The bill proposes different rules for various educational levels. Elementary and middle school students would be required to store their phones away throughout the day, permitting use only before or after school hours. In high schools, phone use would be banned specifically during instructional periods.
"Cell phones are negatively impacting our students’ academic success," stated DeBoer. "As a former teacher, I understand firsthand how essential a focused learning environment is. Our children are the future of our communities, and we must do everything we can to support their education."
DeBoer further commented on the importance of minimizing digital distractions: "Instead of concentrating on their studies, students are often preoccupied with social media and digital distractions. This plan encourages greater learning and academic focus to set students up for long-term success."
House Bill 4141 is now pending further review on the House floor.
