In April 2025, Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan was selected to receive 21 new F-15EX Eagle II jets, replacing its aging fleet of A-10s. According to the Associated Press, this decision followed bipartisan advocacy, including support from Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and was announced by former President Donald Trump. The upgrade is anticipated to enhance the base’s strategic relevance and deliver long-term economic benefits to the region.
Selfridge Air National Guard Base supports approximately 5,000 military and civilian jobs and contributes around $850 million annually to Michigan’s economy. CBS News Detroit reports that the base significantly bolsters local employment and economic development in surrounding communities. These figures underscore Selfridge’s vital role in both defense readiness and regional stability.
The Department of Defense's Fiscal Year 2025 budget request includes $40.9 billion dedicated to core readiness and enabler activities, with $9.3 billion allocated for Air Force flying hours and $18.8 billion for weapons system sustainment. According to the Department of Defense Budget Overview, these allocations are designed to support operational readiness across Air National Guard bases nationwide, ensuring they remain equipped for mission success.
