The Grand Valley State women's soccer team will open its home schedule this weekend with two matches against nationally ranked opponents. The Lakers, currently ranked No. 4, are set to host No. 3 Minnesota State on Friday, September 12 at 7:00 PM and No. 17 Central Missouri on Sunday, September 14 at 12:00 PM.
Grand Valley State started the season with two wins on the road. In their opening match, the Lakers secured a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Ashland with a late goal by Sarah Fromm in the 80th minute. They followed up with a 3-2 win against Cedarville, where Fromm scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute. Fromm was recognized as the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after recording three goals and two game-winning goals across both games.
Goalkeeper Sara Csernyik started both matches for GVSU and made two saves during the opening weekend. Freshmen Cora Conley and Ivy Wilhelm each contributed an assist, marking their first collegiate points.
The Lakers hold a record of seven wins, three losses, and four draws all-time against Minnesota State. Their most recent meeting took place last season in the NCAA Quarterfinals in Mankato, Minnesota, where the match ended in a 1-1 draw before Minnesota State advanced by winning 5-4 on penalty kicks.
Minnesota State enters Friday’s match with one win and one draw so far this season. The Mavericks opened with a scoreless draw against Central Oklahoma and then defeated Central Missouri 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick converted by senior Anna Van Wyngarden in the 76th minute. Sophomore Lauren McAlpine started both games as goalkeeper for Minnesota State and made six saves.
GVSU has won ten times, lost once, and drawn twice all-time against Central Missouri. Last season, Grand Valley State defeated Central Missouri 2-1 on the road in Warrensburg, Missouri. Central Missouri starts this weekend with a record of zero wins, one loss, and one draw after playing to a scoreless tie against Augustana and losing to Minnesota State by one goal. Goalkeeper Kristen Wright has five saves from her two starts this year.
