Western Theological Seminary recently issued the following announcement.
Student Council’s Community Conversations this year will revolve around the theme of the church being an institution. The first conversational speaker is Dr. Mary Li Ma. The conversation is entitled: Understanding the Growth of Churches in China.
Churches in China have experienced exponential growth since the 1990s, but being a Christian in today’s China can also be challenging in many ways. The difficulties are not just political, but social, cultural, and material in nature as well. As the global church, the more we understand the context of Chinese Christians, the better we can pray, support, and effectively serve the church in China.
Who is Dr. Ma? Mary Li Ma grew up in China’s atheistic education system. While doing her PhD at Cornell University, Mary experienced a dramatic and deeply personal conversion to the Christian faith. After finishing her degree, she taught in a top university in Shanghai. Then, both Mary and her husband Jin felt God’s calling for them to get a seminary education. Mary finished a Master’s degree in Theological Studies at Calvin Seminary.
Dr. Ma currently is affiliated with the Henry Institute of Calvin University. Meanwhile, she also contributes to both Christian and public media in the Chinese-speaking world. She is also the author of five books, including Surviving the State, The Chinese Exodus, Religious Entrepreneurism, and a forthcoming monograph on Christian women in China.
