The Grand Valley State University Lakers Women’s Soccer team was recently invited to the State Capitol following their sixth national championship.
“I was thrilled to welcome the GVSU Lakers Women’s Soccer team at the Capitol to celebrate their national title win,” Sen. Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville) wrote in a Facebook post on Jan. 8.
The GVSU Lakers’ website states that the team achieved a 1-0 win over Western Washington on Dec. 14. The winning goal was made by Gianna Parlove during overtime.
“The feeling was just incredible,” Parlove said in an article on the Lakers’ website. “To be surrounded by my best friends and celebrate what we've worked so hard for all year. We showed so much resiliency today and I couldn't be happier.”
The GVSU Soccer team expressed their appreciation for the trip to the Capitol.
“What an honor,” states a post on then GVSU Soccer Facebook page. “We were invited to the State Capitol this evening to meet Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other local legislators. We taught her how to #AnchorUp, gave her a jersey from the title match and got to hear how she got into politics and inspire women everywhere.”
