According to the Michigan House Republicans, state Rep. Bradley Slagh (R-Zeeland) said that he supports a safety-focused approach to restarting Michigan’s struggling economy. He also says he supports reestablishing a "semblance of normalcy" during the COVID-19 crisis.

Republicans in the House unveiled a plan to help move the state forward toward a much-needed restart. The new plan is based on the predominance and risk factors of the novel coronavirus, which varies from region to region.

Slagh says health and safety are paramount in the current times and that he supports the government's efforts in trying to contain the virus. However, he feels that the extended stay-at-home order is excessive.

“Health and safety are of utmost importance, but the livelihood of Michigan residents is also among my top priorities,” said Slagh, according to Michigan House Republicans. “I share the governor’s goal of containing the virus and protecting lives, but I see her expanded stay-at-home order as overreach. We must work together to determine our best path forward for West Michigan and the rest of the state.”

He adds that each county is different and should be reopened at different times. He is adamant and hopeful that the task force can achieve the task at hand.

“Every county is different when it comes to this virus and should not be treated the same,” Slagh told Michigan House Republicans. “West Michigan is ready to start moving toward a safe restart, and I am hopeful we can work together to determine how to do so safely.”

Under the new plan Slagh supports, a task force would be assembled to discuss how the state will be reopened. Some of the members of the new task force would include representatives from Gov. Whitmer’s administration. Members of the Legislature and outside groups would also be included.
