The GVSU men's golf team began their campaign at the NCAA Championships with a solid performance, concluding the opening day tied for third place. They are just two strokes behind the leaders.
Oklahoma Christian and Colorado Christian share the lead after both teams posted rounds of 277, finishing at seven under par. GVSU is level with West Florida in third place at five under par, while Cal State Monterey Bay follows closely in fifth position at four under.
Individually, Manuel Cue Vargas had an impressive round, shooting a 65 (-6) and securing second place with six birdies. Drew Coble is tied for seventh after scoring a 68 with five birdies. Bryce Wheeler finished his round at one over par (72), tying for 43rd with four birdies to his name. Nick Krueger shot a 74 (+3) and made three birdies, placing him in a tie for 68th. Charlie Cooley ended his day tied for 81st after carding a 75 (+4).
GVSU will continue their tournament alongside West Florida and Indiana (Pa.) as they tee off tomorrow at 11:10.
