Grand Valley State University baseball team faced a setback in their series opener against Wayne State, with a final score of 10-5. The game took place on Friday afternoon, and the teams are scheduled to meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Lakers began scoring in the second inning when Brendan Guciardo walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored another wild pitch. Nathan Logan then hit a solo home run, putting GVSU ahead 2-1. However, Wayne State responded with two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

In the fifth inning, GVSU managed to narrow the gap. Logan walked with two outs, followed by a single from Gulbrandsen. Guciardo's double brought in two more runs for the Lakers, making it 5-4.

The seventh inning saw Grand Valley State adding another run after singles by Gulbrandsen and Guciardo. An error by Wayne State's right fielder allowed Ayden VanEnkevort to reach base and plated Gulbrandsen, bringing the score to 6-5.

Despite his efforts on the mound amidst challenging wind conditions, Nick Rutkowski was credited with the loss. He pitched five innings, allowing six runs—four earned—on eight hits.

Connor Schuman contributed significantly with two doubles out of five at-bats. Gulbrandsen, Guciardo, and VanEnkevort each had two hits as well. Logan ended his game going 1-4 with a home run and two runs scored; meanwhile, Guciardo secured two RBIs with his double while also crossing home plate twice along with Gulbrandsen.
