Grand Valley State University secured a 12-7 win against Davenport, completing a four-game weekend sweep at the GVSU Baseball Field on Senior Day. With this victory, GVSU (26-23; 18-12) will enter the 2024 GLIAC Tournament as the #2 seed and face #5 Parkside at Jackson Field in Lansing on Thursday.
The Lakers began strong with senior Kyle Nott walking and scoring from Ryan Dykstra's two-run home run in the first inning. They added another run in the second when Logan Anderson scored off Jake Rydquist's sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, GVSU increased their lead with two more runs following singles by Connor Schuman, Anderson, and MacArthur Graybill.
Davenport responded with three runs in the fifth inning but GVSU maintained their lead with a run scored by Dykstra. The Panthers closed the gap to one run in the sixth, but GVSU extended their advantage again in the seventh and eighth innings. Key contributions came from Dykstra who was 4-5 with four RBIs and four runs, while Rydquist added two RBIs.
Junior Will Goebel earned the win for GVSU, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Colby Phipps contributed by yielding one run on two hits with five strikeouts.
The game also served as an occasion to honor twelve seniors: Brendan Pierce, Logan Anderson, Justin Mansager, McArthur Graybill, Logan Wynalda, Conner McCormack, Jake Rydquist, Sam Leck, Nate Logan, Connor Schuman, Kyle Nott and Nick Rutkowski.
