The Grand Valley State track and field program is preparing to host the annual Al Owens Classic this weekend, starting on Friday, April 19th, and continuing through the 20th. This event will be one of the Lakers' final home meets of the season.
The competition begins at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time with three field events: shot put, discus, and long jump, alongside four heats of the 5000m race.
In men's shot put, Myles Kerner will represent the Lakers as he holds the top entry mark. He currently ranks first in Division II with a throw of 19.67 meters and seventh in All-Collegiate rankings.
For women's shot put, Grand Valley will have five athletes competing, led by Erika Beistle. Joining her are Mackenzie Bohrer, Reette Thorns, Paige Westra, and Margaret Stevenson. Four of these athletes are ranked in the Top 25 in Division II: Bohrer is ninth; Westra is 20th; Stevenson is 21st; and Thorns is 24th.
Beistle, Stevenson, and Westra will also compete in women's discus throw. Beistle ranks first in Division II with a distance of 56.10 meters while Stevenson follows closely in second place with a distance of 52.45 meters.
On the men's side for discus throw are Nathan Spitzley and James MacKey JR.
The jumps crew will participate on Friday with events including men's long jump and both men's and women's high jump. Chrisly Kelly-Cannon leads four men in long jump as he holds the current school record.
In men's high jump, Jaivon Harrison leads his team at their first home outdoor meet this season as he holds a school record. Harrison ranks first (2.26m), Eli Kosiba fourth (2.16m), and Jonathan Rankins-James sixth (2.15m) among competitors.
On track events include sprints crews participating in both men's and women's relay teams for 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The men's team for 4x100 consists of Antonio Passarelli, Max Darling, Andrew Pizzico along with Myles Rhodes whereas women’s team includes Melia Williams Taylor Kyle Catherine Guckenberger Kate Zang respectively
