Grand Valley State prepares for NCAA Division II outdoor nationals

Grand Valley State University's track and field team is preparing to compete in the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Nationals. The event will take place from May 23 to May 25 at Francis G. Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas, hosted by Emporia State University.

The team has a total of 37 individual entries, with 19 women and 18 men participating. Additionally, the men's team will feature two relay teams.

The competition for Grand Valley State begins on Thursday, May 23 at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with Shane Byrne in the men's hammer throw. Byrne ranks 13th in Division II with a personal-best throw of 63.81 meters. Shelby Ulven and Alaina Omonode will participate in the women's hammer throw at 3:30 p.m., holding the second and third spots respectively in Division II rankings.

Taylor DeHommel will compete in the women's pole vault starting at 3:00 p.m., currently ranked tenth in Division II with a personal best of 4.07 meters.

The track events begin with the men's 4x100m relay preliminaries at 4:50 p.m., featuring Antonio Passarelli, Nicholas Walper, Andrew Pizzico, and Myles Rhodes. The top two teams from each heat plus the next four best times will advance to Saturday's finals.

In the men's and women's 1500m preliminaries starting at 5:10 p.m., Caleb Futter and Patrick Lyell represent the men while Klaudia O'Malley competes for the women. The top four athletes from each heat plus the next four best times move on to Saturday's finals.

Myles Rhodes is set for the men's 400m preliminaries at 5:40 p.m., where only the top athlete from each heat plus five others advance to finals.

Caleb Futter takes part in the men's steeplechase preliminaries at 6:40 p.m., followed by Maria Mitchell, Kayce Rypma, and Landyn Howell competing in the women's steeplechase at 7:10 p.m.

Steven Harris and Fallou Gaye will race in the men's 400m hurdles preliminaries at 7:40 p.m.

The first day concludes with Abby Vanderkooi and Madison Ebright competing in the women's 10,000m race beginning at 8:50 p.m.
