The Grand Valley State softball team has progressed to the Midwest Region Two championship game. Despite a 3-2 loss to Trevecca Nazarene in the winner's bracket, the Lakers rebounded with a 4-1 victory over Ohio Dominican in an elimination game.
In their initial match against Trevecca Nazarene, the Trojans took an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning. The Lakers quickly responded with two runs, as Liberti Fair, Megan Koenigshof, and MaryJane Goodman loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Eliana Eiland then hit a grounder past shortstop, allowing Kenedy Coombe and Koenigshof to score. However, Trevecca Nazarene regained control with two runs in the fifth inning from back-to-back RBI singles and secured a narrow win.
Facing Ohio Dominican next, Grand Valley State started strong by scoring two runs in the first inning. Eiland's single and Spicer's double set up Kelsey Komorous for a double that brought both runners home. The Lakers extended their lead with additional runs in the second and fourth innings, ultimately securing a 4-1 win despite Ohio Dominican scoring once in the sixth inning.
Eliana Eiland was instrumental for GVSU, achieving four hits at bat along with an RBI and run scored. Morgan Spicer contributed significantly with two hits, an RBI, run scored, and walk. Kelsey Komorous added a crucial two-RBI double.
Grand Valley State will face Trevecca Nazarene again for the championship on May 11 in Nashville, Tennessee. They must defeat Trevecca twice to advance to the Midwest Super Regionals. The first game begins at 2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT.
The event will be streamed live on the NCAA website. For more information and updates during games, visit gvsulakers.com or follow @GVSUSoftball on social media.
