The Grand Valley State men's basketball team achieved a third consecutive victory by defeating Parkside 59-49 on Thursday night. The game took place during the 616 Night event, improving the Lakers' record to 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Trevor Smith Jr. was instrumental in the win, scoring a season-high of 14 points with an impressive shooting performance and matching his career best with four steals. Jalen Charity contributed significantly with 12 points and eight rebounds, making seven out of eight free throws. William Dunn added to the scoreboard with 11 points and five rebounds, while Shamus Thompson led the team in rebounding with nine.

The Lakers managed a shooting percentage of 40.8% from the field compared to Parkside's 33%. This defensive effort marked the first time GVSU held an opponent under 50 points since their game against Judson in the 2021-22 season, where they limited them to just 46 points. GVSU also had a slight edge in rebounding over Parkside at 36-35.

In a closely contested first half, both teams exchanged leads within the opening minutes. A mid-range jump shot by Smith Jr. helped GVSU establish a five-point lead midway through the half. Despite Parkside briefly taking a three-point lead later on, GVSU responded quickly to regain control before halftime, leading by two after Parkside's buzzer-beater shot.

The second half saw GVSU extend their dominance with a strong start that included a decisive run initiated by Dunn’s jumper and followed by Charity’s three-pointer and Smith Jr.'s steal and score. Kaden Brown further extended this advantage with back-to-back three-pointers.

Parkside attempted a comeback late in the game but fell short as GVSU maintained their composure, closing out on top thanks to crucial plays from Charity and Smith Jr., sealing their win.

Looking ahead, GVSU will face Purdue Northwest on Saturday for Sawyers Day at their home arena. Fans can watch live via FloSports or tune into Thunder Country 107.3 for live commentary.
