The Grand Valley State men's basketball team secured a commanding victory over Purdue Northwest, winning 83-64 on Saturday afternoon. This win marks the fourth consecutive victory for GVSU, bringing their season record to 10-8 and 6-4 in the GLIAC.
Trevor Smith Jr. led the Sawyers with a career-high of 18 points, making eight out of ten shots and two three-pointers. Smith Jr. also contributed five assists, four rebounds, and two blocks. Cam Regenrus achieved a career-high with 10 points and blocked four shots while securing eight rebounds. Marcus Gray II scored a career-high of 14 points, including three successful three-point attempts. William Dunn maintained his streak of scoring in double figures for the fifth consecutive game with 12 points, hitting all three attempts from beyond the arc.
GVSU shot at an efficiency of 47% from the field and made 36% of their three-point attempts while achieving a season-best free throw percentage at 90%, converting nine out of ten attempts. In contrast, Purdue Northwest managed to shoot only 33% from the field and made just over one-third of their three-point shots at 31%. The Sawyers outrebounded their opponents with a total rebound count of 44 compared to Purdue Northwest's 36.
Purdue Northwest started strong with a quick lead through a series of successful three-point shots but was soon overtaken by GVSU's dominant performance as they went on a significant scoring run to secure control over the game. By halftime, GVSU had established a substantial lead that they continued to build upon in the second half.
Looking ahead, GVSU will face Northern Michigan on Thursday in Marquette before playing against Michigan Tech on Saturday in Houghton. Both games will be available for streaming on FloSports and broadcast live on Thunder Country 107.3.
