The Grand Valley State men's basketball team is preparing for the second half of their GLIAC schedule with upcoming games against Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. The Lakers will face Northern Michigan on Thursday at 7:30 PM, followed by a game against Michigan Tech on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
GVSU enters this phase with a 6-4 record in the GLIAC and is currently on a four-game winning streak. They are tied for fourth place in the standings, just two games behind the three teams tied for first place.
In recent performances, GVSU had a successful week with victories over Roosevelt, Parkside, and Purdue Northwest. Trevor Smith Jr. was instrumental in these wins, particularly against Parkside and Purdue Northwest. Kaden Brown also made significant contributions, scoring 30 points at Roosevelt with six three-pointers. William Dunn achieved his second double-double of the season during the same game.
Trevor Smith Jr.'s efforts earned him the title of GLIAC defensive player of the week after achieving career highs in several categories, including scoring 18 points against Purdue Northwest and making four steals against Parkside.
Northern Michigan shares a similar standing with GVSU in the league with a 12-6 overall record and a 6-4 mark in GLIAC play. The Wildcats previously defeated GVSU earlier this season but have struggled recently, losing four out of their last six games.
Key players for Northern Michigan include Dylan Kuehl, who averages 15.3 points per game, Julien Smith with an average of 11.2 points per game, and Sam Privet contributing an average of 10.4 points per game.
Michigan Tech leads the GLIAC standings with an 8-2 record and previously defeated GVSU by one point earlier this year. Marcus Tomashek is a standout player for Michigan Tech, leading both the conference and ranking third nationally by averaging 25.2 points per game.
