The Grand Valley State men's basketball team narrowly lost to Wayne State with a score of 67-66 on Thursday night. This defeat leaves the Lakers with a record of 13-12 for the season and 9-8 in the GLIAC.
Jalen Charity was GVSU's top scorer, contributing 18 points and five rebounds. He achieved this on 5-9 shooting from the field and maintained a flawless performance at the free throw line, going 6-6. Mason Docks added to the scoreboard with 11 points, hitting 3 out of his 7 attempts and also being perfect from the free throw line at 4-4. Kaden Brown chipped in with 10 points, successfully making three out of six shots from beyond the arc. Shamus Thompson and Cam Regnerus were strong on defense, each securing seven rebounds for GVSU.
Wayne State's Carmelo Harris matched Charity's point total by scoring 18 points himself. Harris managed four successful three-pointers out of ten attempts while also collecting three rebounds and two steals. Jordan Briggs was another key player for Wayne State, adding 17 points on an impressive shooting performance where he made seven out of nine shots from the field.
Statistically, GVSU shot at a rate of 40% overall and achieved a three-point shooting percentage of 32%. Wayne State surpassed them slightly with an overall shooting percentage of 43%, although they lagged behind in three-point accuracy at just 25%. Despite losing, GVSU managed to secure more rebounds than Wayne State, tallying up to a total of 37 compared to Wayne State's 34.
The Lakers are set to conclude their home stand this weekend against Saginaw Valley State in what is dubbed as the Battle of the Valleys. The game is scheduled for Saturday at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena with tipoff slated for 3:00 PM.
