The Grand Valley State men's tennis team ended their Florida trip with a 4-3 victory over #14 Florida Southern on Tuesday, March 4. This win brings the Lakers' season record to 7-2.
In doubles competition, GVSU secured the point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Lucas Gonzalez and Victor Loped achieved a 6-4 win in the top doubles match, while Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov dominated with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Chimo Minguez and Denys Zamaraiev faced a narrow defeat with a score of 4-6 at No. 3 doubles.
During singles matches, Denys Zamaraiev won decisively with scores of 6-3, 6-3 at the top position. Jorge Ruiz followed with a straight-set win of 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Ignasi Garros clinched the overall victory for the team by winning his three-set match at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-2, 1-6, and 6-3. Meanwhile, Victor Lopes lost in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 3-6) at No. 2 singles; Lucas Gonzalez was defeated in two sets (2-6, 3-6) at No.3 singles; Patricio Sepulveda also faced a tough loss in three sets (2-6, 6-1, and 3-6) at No.5 singles.
The Lakers will return home to start GLIAC play against Roosevelt on Friday, March 21st. The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Premier Athletic and Tennis Club in Grandville, Michigan.
