Grand Valley State University's baseball team, ranked ninth, competed in a doubleheader against Wayne State University, resulting in a split. GVSU lost the first game 3-0 but rebounded with a decisive 19-3 win in the second game, which ended in seven innings due to the run-rule. The teams will play the final game of a four-game series on Saturday at noon, beginning with a ceremony to honor 11 seniors.
In the second game, Wayne State initially led with two runs in the first inning. However, GVSU responded strongly in the bottom of the first with six runs off six hits. Contributions came from designated hitter Jonas Gulbrandsen and several others, including second baseman Ayden VanEnkevort and right fielder Ryan Stimac. Third baseman Caleb Estrada added two more runs with a well-timed single.
Gulbrandsen, who hit his 11th home run of the season, and shortstop Evan Morrison extended GVSU's lead further. A significant bottom of the fifth saw the Lakers score an additional nine runs off seven hits with multiple players contributing. Senior first baseman Carter Rohman concluded the scoring with his first career two-run home run in the sixth inning.
Senior pitcher Collin Bradley recorded his fifth win of the season, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings. Gill pitched the last two innings, conceding one hit.
Apart from Estrada's performance, several Lakers had notable contributions. Morrison, Gulbrandsen, VanEnkevort, Thelen, and Stimac each made valuable impacts on the scoreboard.
In the first game, GVSU was limited to seven hits and left six players stranded, with four at third base. Pitcher Owen Avery took the loss, having given up three runs, one of which was earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts. Brendan Guciardo and Stimac managed to secure two hits each in the game.
