Grand Valley State University's track and field athletes are set to participate in a series of "last chance" meets from Wednesday through Sunday. These events offer the Lakers an opportunity to qualify for the national championships. The team will compete in at least five meets, including their own GVSU Last Chance Meet on Sunday.
The competition begins on Wednesday at the Hillsdale College Last Chance Meet in Michigan, where 17 athletes will represent GVSU. Brooke Bowers and Ava Collier will participate in the women's pole vault, while Dolan Gonzales and Wyatt Alwine lead six men in the same event. Lucas Lesher is slated to compete in hammer throw.
GVSU's sprinters and hurdlers will also take part, with Brooke Barkocy and Destini Dorkins running the 100m hurdles, Josh Hurt competing in the 110m hurdles, and Lance Riddle participating in the 400m hurdles. The women's 4x100m relay team consists of Catherine Guckenberger, Taylor Kyle, Claire Neumann, and Alaina Diaz.
On Friday, this group will also compete at Baldwin Wallace's Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet in Berea, Ohio. Meanwhile, Grand Valley State's throwers head to the University of Michigan's Len Paddock Open. Mackenzie Bohrer (shot put), Maggie Stevenson (discus), Erika Beistle (both events), Alaina Omonode, Sophia Snellenberger (hammer), and Shelby Ulven are among those competing. Snellenberger recently secured third place at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships.
The men's throwing squad includes Michael Griffey and Lucas Lesher (hammer), Andrew Berryhill and Jerry Capaccio (shot put), James MacKey Jr., Nathan Spitzley (discus), Ray Weatherington, and Dolan Gonzales (pole vault).
In distance events at St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite on Friday, Allie Arnsman and Ana Tucker run the 5000m while Madison Ebright, Maggie O'Malley, and Annika Sandman tackle the 10000m.
The weekend concludes with Sunday's GVSU Last Chance Meet featuring 17 events—six being field events—with GVSU athletes participating except for the 4x400m relay.
