Congressman Bill Huizenga paid tribute to Army Staff Sergeant Troy Smith Knutson-Collins on the floor of the U.S. House today. Huizenga, a representative from Michigan, spoke in memory of Knutson-Collins, who lost his life during a tactical training exercise in Lithuania on April 1st. The incident also claimed the lives of three other members of the 3rd Infantry Battalion.
Knutson-Collins was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan, and graduated from Harper Creek High School in 2015. He had interests in woodworking, football, and gaming. After high school, he played semi-professional football before enlisting in the Army at age 20 as an artillery mechanic. His service included two deployments to Korea and his final assignment in Lithuania.
In his speech, Congressman Huizenga said: "Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life, service, and memory of Staff Sergeant Troy Smith Knutson-Collins." He added that Knutson-Collins will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.
Knutson-Collins is survived by his wife, five children, parents Robert and Tosha Collins, and six siblings. Congressman Huizenga concluded his remarks with a moment of silence for Knutson-Collins: "Mr. Speaker, I ask that we may all rise and honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Troy Smith Knutson-Collins with a moment of silence."
Following these words, Huizenga led a moment of silence among fellow representatives to commemorate Knutson-Collins' service.
