Grand Valley State athletes to compete at NCAA Division II outdoor championships

Forty-three athletes from Grand Valley State University (GVSU) are preparing to compete in the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The event will take place over three days, from May 22 to May 24, and is hosted by Colorado State University - Pueblo.

GVSU's women's team aims for their third outdoor national title, having last won in 2012. The men's team seeks their second title after a victory in 2021. Both teams recently secured GLIAC championship titles and are ranked among the top five nationally. The women hold the number one spot, while the men are ranked fourth.

The competition on Thursday includes participation in 15 events, with seven finals and eight preliminaries. The day's events begin at 11:05 a.m. Mountain Time with the men's pole vault featuring Wyatt Alwine, Colton Emeott, and Dolan Gonzales. Alaina Omonode and Shelby Ulven will compete in the hammer throw at 12:30 p.m., followed by Alaina Diaz in the women's long jump at 2:30 p.m.

The afternoon concludes with Michael Griffey and Lucas Lesher participating in the men's hammer throw at 3:30 p.m., Luke Jelderks competing in the men's long jump at 5:30 p.m., and Ana Tucker and Abby VanderKooi running in the women's 10000m at 8:10 p.m., followed by Sam Martens for the men at 8:30 p.m.

Preliminary running events start at 4:40 p.m., including GVSU's Catherine Guckenberger, Taylor Kyle, Claire Neumann, and Alaina Diaz (alternate Jayla Graham) racing in the women's section of the 4x100m relay. Zach Pray, Nick Walper, Jacody Sikora, and Myles Rhodes (alternate DeMarcus Chapa) follow shortly after.

Klaudia O'Malley competes in the women's section of the 1500m prelims at 5:10 p.m., with Pat Lyell racing for men at 5:25 p.m. Zach Pray and Myles Rhodes return for the men's section of the 400m race at 5:55 p.m. Maria Mitchell and Owen Westerkamp participate in their respective sections of the steeplechase later that evening.

Destini Dorkins concludes Thursday's events for GVSU with her appearance in the women's section of the 400m hurdles scheduled for a start time of approximately 7:40 p.m.
