For the first time in its history, the Grand Valley State University men's golf team has achieved the top spot in the national Division II rankings. The Lakers were voted number one in Scoreboard's first poll of the fall season, surpassing their previous best ranking of second during the 2021-22 season.
The team has competed in four tournaments this fall, securing victories in two and finishing as runner-up in a third. In the Folds of Honor tournament, the Lakers outperformed six Division I teams, including two from Power Five conferences. They earned 73.29 points in the rankings, nearly eight points ahead of the next closest team, and have a 32-1 record in Division II tournaments this year.
On the individual level, Bryce Wheeler has become the second Laker to be ranked as the top golfer in the country, following Charlie DeLong. Wheeler has won one event, finished second in another, and placed fourth in a third tournament this season. Andrew Gwilliams is ranked eighth, marking the highest position of his career. Manuel Cue Vargas is 27th, Charlie Cooley is 32nd, and Maverick Conaway is 35th. Grand Valley State is the only team in the nation with five golfers ranked in the top 35.
The Lakers are scheduled to conclude their fall season at the Nemacolin Intercollegiate in Farmington, Pennsylvania, next Monday and Tuesday.
