The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked second nationally, secured a 2-0 victory over Roosevelt University on Sunday in Schaumburg, Illinois. The win brings the Lakers' season record to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Sonya Mehta opened the scoring in the 24th minute with her third goal of the season, which also marked her first game-winning goal. Ivy Wilhelm assisted with a pass into the middle of the box that Mehta converted for a 1-0 lead.
The team's second goal came in the 66th minute when Acadia Murphy sent a cross from the right side to Sarah Fromm, who scored with a header. This was Fromm's sixth goal of the season, making her the team leader in goals scored. Murphy recorded her second assist this year.
Grand Valley State controlled possession throughout the match and outshot Roosevelt 25-2, including a 14-1 advantage in shots on target. The Lakers also had five corner kicks compared to one by Roosevelt. Alli French led GVSU with six shots, three of which were on target. Fromm registered four shots—all on target—and Kendall Aikens contributed four shots with three on frame. Mehta finished with three shots and one on goal. Goalkeeper Macie Hunter earned her sixth shutout of the season and made one save.
The Lakers will play their final six regular-season games at home. Upcoming matches include Northern Michigan on Friday, October 24th and Michigan Tech on Sunday, October 26th. Both games are scheduled to be streamed live via FloCollege.
