The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over Purdue Northwest on Sunday, Nov. 2, during Senior Day in Allendale. With this result, the Lakers clinched their 18th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season championship. The team's record now stands at 14 wins and two losses overall, with an 11-1 mark in conference play.
The match began with GVSU taking an early lead in the third minute. Following a free kick by Alli French to Sonya Mehta, whose shot was saved by the goalkeeper, Kacy Lauer capitalized on the rebound to score her sixth goal of the season and second of the weekend. The Lakers extended their advantage in the 14th minute when Mackenzie Ford delivered a ball to Alli French, who set up Kendall Aikens for her second goal of the year.
Purdue Northwest responded late in the game with a goal in the 79th minute but could not overcome GVSU's lead.
GVSU outshot Purdue Northwest by a margin of 13-7 and held a 9-4 edge in shots on target. The Lakers also earned six corner kicks while limiting their opponent to one. Sonya Mehta led GVSU with three shots, including one on goal. Kacy Lauer played all 90 minutes and scored her sixth goal of the season. Kendall Aikens recorded her first game-winning goal this year with both her shots landing on target. Alli French contributed two assists and took one shot on goal, while Mackenzie Ford added an assist and played the entire match. Goalkeeper Macie Hunter started for GVSU and made three saves.
Looking ahead, Grand Valley State will host Roosevelt University on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 5:00 p.m., followed by Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 p.m., concluding their regular season schedule at home.
