Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-MN) have announced the creation of the first ever Congressional Caucus on Burma. This caucus aims to provide support for the Burmese people in their fight for democracy and human rights against the brutal military junta. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Burma demands urgent attention from congressional leaders.

On February 1, 2024, which marks the three-year anniversary of the military junta's coup d'etat, Congressman Huizenga expressed his honor in launching the bipartisan Congressional Burma Caucus alongside Congresswoman McCollum. He emphasized that the establishment of this caucus on such a significant date is a powerful display of support for the bravery and determination of the Burmese people. The caucus will serve as a vital channel for Burmese communities across the United States and seek ways to uphold human rights and democratic representation for the people of Burma.

Congresswoman McCollum echoed Congressman Huizenga's sentiments and expressed her pleasure in co-chairing the Congressional Burma Caucus. She highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crises faced by the people of Myanmar and the urgent need for peace and improved civil society. Minnesota's Fourth District, which is home to approximately 17,000 Burmese and Karen refugees, has a personal connection to Congresswoman McCollum, as her father served in the China Burma India Theater during World War II.

The establishment of the Congressional Burma Caucus has garnered appreciation and support from various organizations. Tha T. Par, Executive Director of the Burma Center of Battle Creek, MI, expressed gratitude to Congressman Huizenga for his leadership in establishing the caucus and his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Burma. The Burma Center looks forward to working with Congressman Huizenga in raising awareness and advocating for a better future for the people of Burma.

Dr. Than Oo, Board Chair of the Burma Center of Battle Creek, MI, also extended heartfelt gratitude to Congressman Huizenga for dedicating his time to the cause of Burma. Dr. Oo commended the congressman's genuine concern for his constituents and his unwavering commitment to restoring democracy in Burma.

McCollum for her leadership in the Congressional Burma Caucus and expressed eagerness to work with her in promoting sincere democratic governance in Burma and creating resettlement opportunities for refugees and internally displaced persons.

The establishment of the Congressional Burma Caucus is a significant step towards garnering bipartisan support for the Burmese people in their pursuit of democracy and human rights. This caucus will provide a platform for addressing the challenges faced by Burma and advocating for a brighter future for its people.
