Grand Valley State athletes advance to finals at NCAA Division II Nationals

Grand Valley State University's track and field teams have completed the first day of competition at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Emporia, Kansas. The women's team stands in eighth place with 7.5 points, while the men's team has yet to score.

The women's team earned all their points in field events. Shelby Ulven led the way in the hammer throw, securing fourth place with a distance of 58.38 meters. Alaina Omonode followed in eighth place with a throw of 55.99 meters. In the pole vault, Taylor DeHommel tied for seventh by clearing a height of 4.00 meters.

On the track, several athletes advanced to finals scheduled for later this week. Caleb Futter, Patrick Lyell, and Klaudia O'Malley will compete in the 1500m finals on Saturday, May 25th. Futter and Maria Mitchell also qualified for the 3000m steeplechase finals set for Friday, May 24th.

The men's 4x100m relay team—comprising Antonio Passarelli, Nicholas Walper, Andrew Pizzico, and Myles Rhodes—advanced to Saturday's final after posting a time of 40.13 seconds in preliminaries.

Day two of competition begins on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Central Time with the men's discus throw event featuring James Mackey Jr., Nathan Spitzley, Eli Kosiba, Jonathan Rankins-James, and Jaivon Harrison competing in various events throughout the day.
