Two Grand Valley State University (GVSU) student-athletes have been recognized with the GLIAC Commissioner's Award, as announced by the conference office. Drew Coble and Klaudia O'Malley received the honor, contributing to GVSU's history of over 150 award winners.
Drew Coble, a senior golfer in his fifth year at GVSU, achieved a remarkable season. He earned his first All-American recognition with First-Team honors from PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This year, he was named GLIAC Golfer of the Year and PING All-Region. In 13 tournaments, Coble secured three victories and five additional top-10 finishes. His wins included the Folds of Honor Challenge, Lander Bearcat Classic, and Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational. The Lake Orion native was among five finalists for the Jack Nicklaus Division II Player of the Year award. Coble is only the eighth player in program history to be named an All-American, marking the program's 10th total All-American honor. He shot 29 rounds at par or better and recorded 15 rounds in the 60s with a low round of 67. As a graduate student in Communications, he maintained a GPA of 3.76 and was part of the GLIAC Academic Excellence team.
Klaudia O'Malley concluded her 2023-2024 season with notable achievements in track & field. She finished third in the 1500m at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Nationals and placed tenth in the 5000m event, earning two All-America Honors. O'Malley contributed to her team's fourth-place national finish with an overall score of 39.5 points this season. She won first place in both the 800m and 5000m events at this year's Outdoor GLIAC Championships, setting a personal-best time of 2:09.57 in the 800m race. The Lakers secured their 24th consecutive Outdoor GLIAC Championship title with a team score of 245.5 points this year.
O'Malley ranks third overall in GVSU history for both the 1500m and 5000m events after achieving a personal-best time of 15:51.30 in the latter during this year's Bryan Clay Invitational; she also ranks seventh overall for GVSU in history for her performance in outdoor track & field as well as being honored twice as an All-American along with receiving three regional accolades while maintaining high academic standards having obtained cumulative GPA reaching up towards almost perfect mark standing out amongst peers majoring occupational therapy; recently recognized by earning Academic Excellence status through participation within same conference where they compete athletically alongside others striving toward similar goals.
