GVSU excels on second day of NCAA Division II track championships

Grand Valley State University (GVSU) continued to demonstrate its strength on the second day of the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado. The event, hosted by Colorado State University – Pueblo, saw GVSU's athletes securing significant positions in various competitions.

Erika Beistle and Maggie Stevenson were notable participants in the women's discus throw. Beistle, a senior and reigning National Champion, successfully defended her title with an impressive throw of 65.05m (213-5), setting a new NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships record and marking the best throw ever recorded on Colorado soil. Stevenson also performed well, achieving a personal-best throw of 55.64m (182-6) to secure the position of National Runner-Up.

In other events, GVSU's James Mackey Jr. and Nathan Spitzley did not advance to the finals in men's discus. In running events, several GVSU athletes competed but did not progress to finals. Notably, Brooke Barkocy set a personal-best time in the 100m hurdles with a finish at 13.67.

Maria Mitchell participated in the steeplechase for GVSU with a time of 11:03.97 while Owen Westerkamp finished fourth in his category with a time of 9:02.19.

The women's team comprising Catherine Guckenberger, Claire Neumann, Addison Washler, and Alaina Diaz achieved a personal-best time in the 4x400m relay but did not qualify for finals. Conversely, their male counterparts—Zach Pray, Dominik Balenda, Trannon Aylor, and Myles Rhodes—set a program record with their qualifying time of 3:06.63.

The final day will see freshman Brooke Bowers competing in women's pole vault starting at 11 a.m., followed by Erika Beistle participating again alongside Mackenzie Bohrer in shot put at 1:15 p.m.

Jaivon Harrison and Jonathan Rankins-James will showcase their skills in men's high jump later that afternoon while Zach Pray leads his team once more for the men's 4x100m relay at 5:20 p.m., aiming for another podium finish after breaking their own program record earlier this week.

Klaudia O'Malley is scheduled to race twice; first at 5:35 p.m., having qualified for the finals earlier this week before closing out her collegiate career alongside Natalie Graber during women’s 5000m later that evening.

Myles Rhodes will compete solo in men’s 400m at around half-past six before joining forces again with teammates Pray Balenda Aylor aiming towards another successful outcome during tomorrow night’s concluding men’s relay event scheduled precisely five minutes past nine o'clock sharp!
