THE HOLLAND SENTINEL: Businesses vary on enforcement of mask requirement

Facemask

The Holland Sentinel issued the following announcement on April 27

Michiganders are now required to wear masks or face coverings in public indoor spaces like grocery stores.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer changed what was previously a recommendation to a requirement in her latest executive order she issued April 24. Individuals who can’t wear a mask due to a medical reason are exempt from the requirement.

The new rule went into effect Monday. There were a few people without a face mask on Monday shopping at Meijer, 746 E. 16th St. in Holland, but most customers had a face covering of some kind.

People who do not wear masks in indoor public spaces will not face any criminal consequences. Whitmer did say, however, Friday during a press conference that indoor businesses could deny entry to customers not wearing a mask. The governor stressed that non-healthcare workers should not be wearing medical grade masks, due to their short supply.

Businesses are required to provide employees with face coverings or masks to wear at work as well.

Employees at Meijer and Walmart in Holland told The Sentinel on Monday they are not denying customers entry if they are not following the mask requirement; however, the requirement for employees to wear face coverings is being enforced.

“We will not deny customers entry,” said an assistant manager at Walmart at 2629 N. Park Drive in Holland. “It is a suggestion, but we are not enforcing it.”

Walmart employees come in through a special door and go through a health screening, get their temperature taken, and get a mask and gloves to wear, the Walmart assistant manager said.

Greenhouses were permitted to reopen as part of the April 24 order. Some of the local greenhouses are turning away customers from garden centers if they are not wearing a mask.

Jonker’s Garden in Holland is requiring customers wear masks in its indoor garden center. Countryside Greenhouse in Allendale hired a security guard to monitor its entrance and turn away customers not wearing a face covering.
