The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked fifth nationally, secured a 3-0 victory over Northern Michigan on Friday night in Allendale. With this win, the Lakers improved their season record to 11-2 and hold an 8-1 standing in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
The Lakers opened the scoring in the 39th minute when Ivy Wilhelm found the net after receiving a pass from Mackenzie Ford. Just before halftime, Northern Michigan attempted to clear the ball, but it deflected off Wilhelm and landed at Vesna Dennison's feet. Dennison then scored from 25 yards out, marking her first goal of the season.
In the second half, Sarah Fromm extended the lead to 3-0 in the 62nd minute, registering her seventh goal of the season. Kacy Lauer assisted Fromm, who created space at the top of the box and scored with a shot that beat the goalkeeper.
Grand Valley State outshot Northern Michigan 14-7, with five shots on target compared to two for the Wildcats. The Lakers earned four corner kicks and did not concede any. Acadia Murphy played the entire match for Grand Valley State.
