Matt Hall, State Representative of Michigan, said that President Trump's tariff policy has brought General Motors manufacturing back to Michigan, creating jobs and boosting the economy. The statement was made on X.
"Donald Trump fought hard for American workers and delivered a BIG WIN for Michigan," said Hall, State Representative from Michigan. "Trump's smart tariff strategy brought General Motors home, securing real jobs and real growth. Promises made, promises kept."
In June 2025, General Motors announced a $4 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing, including at Michigan’s Orion Assembly plant, as a response to President Trump’s 25% auto-import tariffs. According to Reuters, this move reflects GM’s shift back to domestic gas-powered vehicle production after federal mandates previously pushed electric vehicle investments. The policy marks a significant pivot from the Biden-era Green New Deal framework, aligning with Trump’s "America First" trade agenda.
GM’s Michigan expansion is projected to create approximately 2,500 direct manufacturing jobs by 2027, with an additional 4,500 jobs expected through related industries and local service providers. According to Michigan economic development officials cited by Reuters, the tariff-driven reinvestment is intended to restore domestic production capacity and reverse job losses tied to overseas electric vehicle supply chains.
A 2024 MichAuto study found that electric vehicle manufacturing typically requires 20–30% fewer workers than gas-powered vehicle production due to simplified assembly and fewer drivetrain components. As automakers like GM scale back electric vehicle targets in favor of traditional production, job preservation becomes a key advantage for states like Michigan seeking to maintain their manufacturing workforce.
Hall is the current Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives and a Republican legislator representing District 42 since 2019. According to Ballotpedia, he previously chaired the House Tax Policy Committee and has emphasized pro-growth policies, manufacturing support, and infrastructure expansion. Hall plays a central role in shaping Michigan’s economic development response to federal trade and energy shifts.
