The Grand Valley State University men's basketball team secured an 88-59 victory over Wilberforce in an exhibition matchup at the Hoops and Culture event, held at Wayne State in Detroit.

Javion Otten led the Lakers with 17 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field and making three out of six attempts from beyond the arc. Ethan Alderink contributed 12 points on efficient 5-for-6 shooting, along with three rebounds and two steals. Marcus Gray II also scored 12 points, hitting four of his six shots, including two three-pointers, and recorded four steals. David Wilkerson and Antaune Allen each added eight points to the team's total.

Mason Docks stood out by distributing a game-high nine assists while also leading Grand Valley State in both steals (six) and rebounds (six).

The Lakers finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point range. In comparison, Wilberforce shot 34 percent overall and just 22 percent from deep. Grand Valley State dominated inside scoring with a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint and forced their opponents into committing 31 turnovers, resulting in a significant edge of 38-13 in points off turnovers. The Lakers collected a total of 19 steals as a team.

Both teams were even on offensive boards with ten apiece; however, Grand Valley State tallied more assists as a team with 26 compared to Wilberforce's nine.

Looking ahead, Grand Valley State will open its regular season against Ashland on Friday, November 14th at a neutral site game in Toledo, Ohio scheduled for a 6:00 pm tipoff.
