Grand Valley State took an early lead in the seventh minute when Sarah Fromm scored her eighth goal of the season. Fromm extended the lead just four minutes later with her second goal of the match and ninth of the season. Kendall Aikens intercepted a pass from a Saginaw Valley State defender and delivered it to Fromm in front of goal, who finished past the goalkeeper in the 11th minute.
Saginaw Valley State responded in the 38th minute by scoring off a set piece to narrow Grand Valley's lead to one. Both teams failed to score during the second half. Each side registered seven shots after halftime. The Lakers outshot Saginaw Valley State overall by 15-10 and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on target. Corner kicks were even at five each.
