THE HOLLAND SENTINEL: Districts update graduation plans

Grad 02

The Holland Sentinel issued the following announcement on May 11

Several area high schools have started to select dates for graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020.

Most area districts were planning for ceremonies in late May, but have had to adjust plans with Michigan’s stay home order currently set to run through May 28 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Holland, Holland Christian, West Ottawa, Zeeland East, Zeeland West, Saugatuck, Hamilton, Fennville and Holland Calvary schools had graduation ceremonies planned between May 19-28 that will have to be moved.

Holland, which had planned for a May 26 graduation, will hold its ceremony at 7 p.m. on June 1 at the Holland Civic Center.

While graduates can walk across the stage and hear their names called, the event will require attendees to stay in their cars before, during and after commencement so social distancing rules can be maintained.

The ceremony will be broadcast with the assistance of local radio stations and via social media on Facebook Live. Each graduate will be limited to one vehicle that can fit into one regular-sized parking space.

A DVD recording and professional photos will be provided to each graduate so that families do not need to leave their vehicles.

Zeeland will plan to hold senior celebration days from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 27 (Zeeland East) and May 28 (Zeeland West), the original planned dates for graduation.

Graduations for Zeeland East and West are tentatively scheduled for July 20 and 31, respectively, at Zeeland Stadium, pending any executive orders from the state.

Saugatuck Public Schools is scheduled to have graduation on at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, at the athletics stadium. The district was originally set for May 21.

Fennville Public Schools will release a video with a “graduation feel” featuring commencement speeches and the reading of each graduate’s name on June 4.

That same day, staff members and Board of Education members will deliver diplomas and a flash drive with the graduation video to each graduate.

Other area schools, including West Ottawa, Hamilton, Holland Christian and Black River, have not posted updated plans for graduation events as of Monday afternoon, May 11.
